THE GREAT BAKE OFF

Our Great Bake-Off event is inspired by the Great British Bake-Off programme on TV, Enter your home baked goods into the competition for judging.  There are 12 categories of baking (listed below) The bakes will either be formally judged or judged by tasting samples and a public vote.  There is a prize for the winner and rosettes for the runners up.  For those without a sweet tooth, take part in the Packington Sports Relief Half Mile - a half mile route around Packington starting and ending at the village hall or test your skill on the Table Tennis Table in a knockout tournament for young and old.

The Sports Relief Half mile, take a gentle stroll around the half mile route spotting pictures of cakes along the way and it's all in aid of charity.  Starting and finishing at Packington Memorial Hall between 2pm and 4pm.  All donations welcome, ask your friends and family to sponsor you!

The Great Bake-Off Classes and Categories : The Bake-Off: You can enter into as many classes and categories as you wish. The competition is open to everyone. £1.00 per entry [£2.50 for 3 entries] .Ready, Steady ... Bake !!!

1. TECHNICAL CHALLENGE The recipe for the technical challenge cake is given below and must be used to enter into this category. The cake should be light and airy with the perfect amount of jam and just a dusting of caster sugar... 

     1a. The Victoria Sandwich cake.

2. THE SIGNATURE BAKE  Your signature bake – your perfectly crunchy biscuits, or tastiest fluffiest scones.  It's the recipe that never lets you down and you do best ...

     2a. Six biscuits or cookies.
     2b. Six scones - savoury, fruit or plain.
     2c. Fruit pie - a fruit filling or your choice with a pie crust.
     2d. Tray bake - your choice of tray bake cut into 12 pieces, for example brownies, millionaires shortcake - anything that is baked in a tray!
     2e. Six sausage rolls or savoury cheese swirls.
     2f. A small loaf of bread, or six bread rolls – must be yeast based.
     2g. Junior [Ages 10 – 16] A Signature bake of your choice from any of categories 2a, 2b, 2c,2d, 2e, 2f or 3a.
     2h. Junior [Ages < 10] The animal challenge.  An open category of baking but it must have an animal theme.

3. THE SHOW STOPPER CHALLENGE Something a little special, be it an unusual flavour combination, spectacular or quirky.  The show stopper bake should stand out from the crowd.

     3a. Six cupcakes, macaroons, meringues or profiteroles

4. THE INVENTION CHALLENGE The Invention challenge invites you to explore the creative side of your baking … 

     4a. Sports Relief Challenge - a sponge cake of your choice but it must have a sporty theme.
     4b. The Irish Challenge – for St Patricks Day, an open category of baking of anything Irish or Irish themed.

BAKE-OFF JUDGING

The Technical Challenge & Shop Stopper Challenge bakes will be formally judged in a closed room on flavour, looks, bake and bake uniformity between 2.00-3.30pm.  The winners of these categories will be announced at 4.00 pm and the cakes/bakes will all be sold, cut up for sample tasting or auctioned after the winners have been declared.

The Signature Bakes will be judged on taste only using a public vote between 2.00 and 4.00pm.  The bakes will be cut up into sample peices and offered to the public for tasting.  The public will then place a vote for their favourite.

The Invention Challenge will be judged both on looks and taste using a public vote. Between 2.00 and 3.00pm the bakes will be on display to vote for the best looking cake, Between 3.00 and 4.00 the bakes will be cut up into sample peices and offered to the public for tasting.  The public will then place a vote for their favourite.

VOTING BEAN SYSTEM

To be a judge of the Signature and Invention categories, you will be given a plate, fork, napkin and voting bean.  Choose which bakes you would like to sample.  For health & safety please use only the tongs provided to place a bake on your plate.  Do not use your fingers.  Please keep a close eye on your children so that strict hygiene standards are adhered with.  Move along the line choosing the bakes you would like to sample keeping a note of the 'bake number'.  place your voting bean in the relevant voting pot for the bake you wish to vote for.  The bakes with the highest votes wins.

OTHER EVENTS:

CUPCAKE DECORATING :You have 30 seconds to decorate a cupcake.  Prize for the best. … or for the little ones simply decorate (and eat) a cupcake …

TABLE TENNIS KNOCKOUT TOURNAMENT :  Anyone aged 8 and over can enter the table tennis tournament.  The winner of each match will go through to the next round, the loser is knocked out. Normal Table Tennis rules apply
Entry £1 per person.
Please book ASAP to guarantee your place in the tournament.

RULES

1. The competition is open to all non-professional bakers and all ingredients must be safe and legal.
2. Entry fee is £1.00 per entry, or 3 for £2.50
3. All entries must be made by the entrant whose name is on the entry form.
4. All entries will be sold or auctioned during the event.
5. Place cards and exhibits must remain in place throughout the event.
6. The committee reserves the right to refuse an entry and accepts no responsibility for any loss or damage to entries.
7. All judging is ‘blind’ i.e. the judges will not know the identity of the entrant – the judge’s decision is final.

Please observe good food hygiene when baking your Homemade cakes and bakes and store and transport them safely:  

·        Buy ingredients from a reputable supplier and ensure they are well within their ‘use by’ or ‘best before’ dates.

·        Hand washing should take place before and whilst preparing cakes

·        Make sure surfaces, bowls, utensil etc are clean before use

·        Avoid using raw eggs in anything that will not be thoroughly cooked such as icing or mousse.

·        Transport cakes in clean sealable containers and keep unwrapped cakes covered

PRIZES

A prize will be given to the winner in each category.  A rosette will be given for 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th places.

 VICTORIA SANDWICH CAKE

175g (6oz) self-raising flour
175g (6oz) butter
175g (6oz) caster sugar
3 eggs, beaten

Method
•Pre-heat the oven to 190ºC, gas mark 5. Grease and line two 7” sandwich tins.
Sieve the flour into a bow., Beat the butter until soft. Add the sugar and continue to cream until you have a light, fluffy mixture. Add the egg a little at a time. Beat well after each addition.  Add the flour.  Divide the mixture between the two tins and level the surfaces slightly. 
Bake for 20 minutes or until well-risen and firm to the touch. Turn out of the tins and cool.
Sandwich together with jam and a dusting of caster sugar.

 2.00 – 3.30pm Closed judging of the Technical Challenge and Show Stopper bakes in the meeting room.
 2.00 – 4.00pm Public voting for Signature & Invention bakes by tasting these bakes. Voting is by voting bean system.
 2.00 – 5.00pm Table Tennis tournament
 3.00 – 4.00pm Cupcake challenge, decorate a cupcake in 30 seconds
 2.00 – 4.00pm Take part in the Sports Relief half mile.
 4.00pm Winners of Technical & Showstopper announced. Auctions / sale of these bakes
4.30pm Winners of Signature & Invention announced & Prize giving
12.00 – 5.00 Tea, coffee & cakes

 HOW TO ENTER 

Fill in a booking form and return to either Daybreak Services or 14 Homecroft Drive, Packington, Ashby De La Zouch, LE65 1WG, or

Fill in your details in the online booking form (Link at the top of the page) about which categories you plan to enter, your name and contact details etc….

We’d appreciate it if you book in advance; it helps us with our planning of the event. We are offering a voucher for a FREE hot or cold drink if we receive your booking form by  Saturday 10th March.

On the day, please drop off your bakes between 12 pm and 2 pm, any entry received after 2pm will still be welcome but not be entered into the bake off competition.

The Signature and Invention challenge bakes will be cut up into small pieces.  Signature bake tasting from 2.00 – 4.00 pm, Invention bake viewing from 2.00 -.300 pm and tasting from 3.00 -4.00pm.  Strictly on a first come first serve basis. 

The Table Tennis Tournament will commence at 2 pm, players need to register on the day between 1.30 – 2.00pm.
