Chairmans Report   2008-9

Since our previous AGM on 27th February last year we have had eight meetings.  It has been quite a busy year.  We have welcomed two new members - Jim and Steve.  We've maintained a presence in the village;  Doug. attended the village open evening with a display of publications.  Jim and Wally represented us at the Carnival in June, displaying some photos and raising £13 in sales which was donated to the Memorial Hall Fund.  In August Jessie sold our publications on her book stall at Open Gardens, raising £21 for the church's fabric fund.  Then, in November, our photo archive and some of our newspaper cuttings were made available to the public at the charity coffee morning in the church.  We also sent a letter of support for the refurbishment of the Memorial Hall to help the committee in their application for a grant from the lottery fund.

Our major activity of the year was for Ashby Museum.  Members produced short articles on the seven photos used in our Packington display in the museum which have beeen submitted for use in their magazine.   We have also agreed to share proceeds of the publication sales made by the museum on a 50/50 basis - except for 'Where were you in the war?' , which at a £1 sale price will go entirely to the museum.   Our projected visit to the musuem, however, did not take place but we have a provisional date for the coming year.

We have also started trying to record the gravestones in the churchyard.   An existing map is without a key and doesn't seem to match reality on the ground, but David started photographing the stones.   Other activities have included a talk on the mill by Sarah, a look at our photo archives, a study of some new photos of a plane that landed here in 1918 and the raising of a mystery - where was Cresswell Farm?

Finally, the year concluded with our annual party and the traditional 'Call my Bluff'.
